Leading goal scorer for FCPS sits down with Greg Swatek

What does it take to be a good goal scorer?

To me, it takes receiving the opportunity from other teammates to allow you to get yourself set up in a position to score a goal. It takes focus and the drive to want to score. Every time you get the ball, you want to go to the goal and attack and score.

You are one of the leading scorers (10 goals, 1 assist) in Frederick County for girls soccer right now. What does that mean to you, and why do you think you've had so much success already?

To me, that means that my team is helping me help our team get better and win games. It's nice that I have an individual honor that allows me to stand out within our county. But I've been given the opportunity by my coach and other players on my team to score. They have set me up, and I am the target striker, so to speak, to be the one to finish opportunities.

The team had some great goal scorers that graduated in recent seasons. What has it been like for you to step into that role as the primary striker?

At first, I thought it would be a lot of pressure because I thought I would be the only one up there working. But, as the team has come along and come together, I really felt like I could handle the role and the position. After watching other players before me come along, I've had the chance to learn from them what works and doesn't work. I have been able to build off of them and help my game improve and be the dominant player that I need to be for my team.

How would you describe this season's team?

Our team has still carried on the legacy of winning. I think, as we've progressed through the season, we have bonded and come closer together. Our team is fairly young this year because we had a lot of seniors graduate last year. But our team is still strong and competitive like it has been in the past. A lot of people might not think so because we've had a large number of seniors graduate, but [we] work well together and communicate well with each other. We get together off the field. We just do what we need to do to win.

This week, the game that everybody is looking at and talking about is the Urbana game on Thursday. What do you think that game will be like?

I think that game is going to be very competitive. I know we have worked as a team in practice to prepare for that match. But, right now, we are also focused on the game we have coming up Monday at South Hagerstown. We want to get a result from that game and the one Thursday against Urbana.
