Putterman leads Lancers to 1st state title and success off the field

Howie Putterman tells his players and reporters alike that he is rarely at a loss for words.

But this was one occasion when he didn’t know quite how to respond.

Putterman was named the 2017 National High School Girls Coach of the Year for large schools by United Soccer Coaches, a reflection not just of the past season — during which he led Linganore to its first state title for girls soccer — but Putterman’s 10 years on the job — during which the Lancers have become one of the premier programs in the state.

Over the past five seasons, Linganore is 76-10-6 with the state championship in November and two previous runs to the state final.

“This award is a testament to the supportive, educationally based, yet still competitive atmosphere that my athletic directors, principals and the Central Maryland Conference creates,” Putterman said.

“But most of all, it is about the players I have coached and how they give to each other and to the coaching staff each and every day. I am honored to be a part of this team.”

Putterman will be honored Jan. 19 in Philadelphia at the annual awards banquet for United Soccer Coaches.

“I am excited to learn that Coach Putterman is being honored for such a prestigious award,” Haley Barge, a senior striker and Linganore’s leading goal scorer for the season, said. “Coach created a vision and expectation for a talented group of young women to trust each other, play as a team, never give up and always be competitive.”

In 2016, he was named Maryland’s large school Coach of the Year.

Putterman wears many hats in the local soccer community. He is an assistant coach for FC Frederick’s Pro23 women’s team. He is a soccer chairperson for the Central Maryland Conference and a secretary for the Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer. In addition, he serves on the MPSSAA’s state soccer committee and is the Class 3A West regional tournament director.
