United Soccer Coaches Announces National High School Coach of the Year Honors

Linganore girls' Putterman earns National Coach of the Year for Large Schools

United Soccer Coaches announced on Tuesday the association’s 2017 Regional and National Coaches of the Year for high school boys’ and girls’ soccer.

Large School: Howard Putterman, Linganore HS (Frederick, Md.)

Coach Putterman has been at the helm of the girls’ program at Linganore High School in Frederick, Maryland for 10 years.  In that time, the Lancers have been to 5 Regional Championships, and advanced to the State Final 3 times.  The program finally won their 1st Maryland State title in 2017.  During this 10 year span, Coach Putterman’s teams have also garnered many important accolades, including 7 United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards, and 3 United Soccer Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Awards, including a Platinum level award in 2016 and a Gold in 2017.  The Lancers have compiled a 76-10-6 record over the last 5 years.  He has been fortunate enough to coach 2 Scholar All-Americans and 3 All-South Region players.

Coach Putterman has been coaching High School Soccer for 19 years, including 7 years as an assistant/JV coach for the girls’ at Quince Orchard HS (MD) and 2 years as Head Coach at Damascus HS (MD) and has amassed 186 wins in this time.  He earned Maryland 3A Large School Coach of the Year honors in 2016.  In addition, Coach Putterman serves in the following roles:

  • National Chair, High School Girls Membership Group – United Soccer Coaches
  • Maryland State Soccer Committee, District I Girls’ Representative – MPSSAA
  • 3A West Regional Tournament Director - MPSSAA
  • Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer (MACS) – Secretary
  • Central Maryland Conference Soccer Chair – Frederick County
  • Assistant Coach, Pro23 Women, FC Frederick – Club Champions League

Regional and National Coaches of the Year will be formally acknowledged for their accomplishments at the United Soccer Coaches Awards Banquet on January 19, 2018 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center during the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Convention.
